Now live: LATAM awards can be booked on the Alaska Airlines website

There has been a lot of news recently about the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan loyalty program. In late September, Alaska announced that a new prize table was coming and some changes with partner reservations. A week later, Alaska announced that Cathay Pacific redemptions could now be booked online.

Now, it appears that LATAM Airlines redemptions can also be booked online through Mileage Plan.

The basics

Starting November 3, Alaska Mileage Plan added online reservations for LATAM. Previously, you had to call Alaska to book any awards on LATAM, though you could normally book all other partner redemptions online.

This is definitely a good thing because previously you had to pay a one-time phone booking fee of $15. This basically left you no choice because your only option was to book by phone.

Sweet spot for redemptions in LATAM

Alaska Airlines miles are the most valuable airline currency in TPG’s monthly valuations thanks to Alaska’s many individual airline associations.

Alaska miles are incredibly valuable when flying business class to South America. All business class flights to South America are the same price, whether you’re going to Santiago, Chile or São Paulo.

You’ll pay 45,000 Alaska Airlines miles to fly these routes in business class seats. Plus, you can get a free stopover when connecting through Santiago or Lima, Peru on your way to another destination thanks to Alaska’s generous stopover policy.

If you want to hit South America with a decent business-class product, you’ll want to book these prizes quickly. As discussed, Alaska will be changing award prices by the end of the year on some routes. According to the airline, “member award levels may vary based on multiple factors, such as route, distance or demand.”

Bottom line

It is now possible to redeem Alaska Mileage Plan miles for travel on LATAM Airlines online. While there are better ways to use Alaska Mileage Plan miles, redeeming them in LATAM Business Class to and from South America provides solid redemption value. Also, given a possible upcoming devaluation, it might be a good idea to secure an award flight on LATAM now, even if it’s for travel through 2023.
